Duke Energy located in Indiana, opened up a 618-megawatt advanced technology coal gasification plant. This power plant is one of the world’s cleanest coal-fired power generating facilities. The plant uses advanced technology to gasify coal, strip out pollutants, and then burn that cleaner gas to produce electricity. The technology substantially reduces the environmental impact of burning coal to produce electric power.
Environmental Advantages of the New Facility:
- Produces ten times the amount of energy as the previous coal burning energy facility, yet maintain 70% cleaner emissions
- Uses excess steam to power another turbine to create more power (this steam would normally be wasted)
- Reduce typical Carbon Dioxide emissions by nearly 50%
- Uses Less water than other coal burning plants
The facility in Edwardsport has also been an important job-creator during a down economy. As one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in Indiana, about 3,500 construction workers and other professionals worked on-site during peak construction. Construction began in 2008. The plant will employ about 140 full-time workers. In addition, the 1.7 million to 1.9 million tons of coal the plant will use each year will support an estimated 170 mining jobs

As energy programs gain government funding to improve the nation’s sources of renewable resources, more opportunities for energy-related construction are made available. LCPtracker provides a total prevailing wage labor compliance software tool to monitor and check certified payrolls and prevailing wage requirements. The software can reduce administrative hours by 50 to 80 percent, depending on how many reports are utilized, as well as eliminate storage costs of certified payrolls. Thus, with LCPtracker you can dramatically reduce the risk of audit failure or potential employee payroll restitutions.
